Van Gaal wants Man Utd to play attractive football

Louis van Gaal has insisted he wants Manchester United to play attractive football amid criticism over the team’s playing style and boldly said the formation didn’t have anything to do with it.

The Dutchman has often employed a 3-5-2 formation this season, which provides defensive stability but stunts the side going forward.

A number of United fans have called for Van Gaal to change to a 4-4-2 diamond which has been used sparingly this campaign or a formation which utilises wingers.

The experienced manager rejected the criticism, saying the formation doesn’t matter and he is only concerned about playing attractive football.

Asked about the team’s formation, Van Gaal said: ”It’s not about playing with or without wingers, or with three or four defenders. It’s about an attractive playing style.”

The much-maligned 3-5-2 formation has also meant United players such as Adnan Januzaj and Ander Herrera have had to settle for a place on the bench this season.

Van Gaal will point to the team’s results as vindication for his decisions, as United are third in the Premier League table and have reached the fifth round of the FA Cup.

It is vital that the club get Champions League football next season so fans are unlikely to see a change in formation as long as it gets positive results.
