De Gea’s current contract expires in the summer of 2015 so Man United and his current form has pushed him into the limelight with Real Madrid interested in bringing him back to his hometown.
Mendes has already discussed De Gea’s future and is confident he will still be a Man United player next season, something fans are certainly hoping is the case.
“It is not true that it’s done,” Mendes told Spanish radio station Cadena SER.
“I’m negotiating the renewal. We have not signed anything for now. The players decide what they want from negotiations and at first it seems we are able to continue there, but no, nothing has signed yet.”
Man United fans had hoped a deal for De would have already been wrapped up by now but at least the negotiations are currently ongoing behind the scenes, which is at least a step in the right direction.
Against West Ham yesterday, De Gea once again showed how important he is to Man United because his saves to keep the score at 1-0 proved crucial when Daley Blind scored a last minute equaliser.
Goalkeepers of De Gea’s quality don’t come around very often, especially aged 24, and Ed Woodward has to make sure securing his long term future is the club’s main priority this year.
