Ben Pearson keen to follow in Paul Scholes’ footsteps

Manchester United’s Ben Pearson is keen to follow in the footsteps of Paul Scholes as he continues to impress while on loan at Barnsley.

The Tykes’ boss Danny Wilson has praised Pearson following some good performances in League One and the club extended his loan deal yesterday.

The 2013 Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year is hoping to emulate United legend Scholes and says the physical nature of the league is helping his development.

Speaking about his time at Barnsley, Pearson said: “I like to think I’m a bit similar [to Scholes] but I’m not as strong. I want to follow in his footsteps and playing in this sort of league will only help me do that.

“The physicality is miles different. There are a lot more second balls to be won and it’s a little bit more direct.

“There’s not as much respect given to your opponent in this league, rather than the Under-21s, so you have to get into space yourself and feed off other players.”

Pearson has endeared himself to Barnsley fans with an energetic style of play and scored his first ever senior goal during Barnsley’s 2-1 win over Port Vale earlier this month.

The youngster is quickly establishing himself as an important player for Barnsley and United fans will be happy to see him getting first team experience.

It is an encouraging time for Pearson and we’ll continue to follow his progress during his short-term move and to see how he gets on.
