Marnick Vermijl reveals Will Keane’s nickname was ‘Berbatov’

Marnick Vermijl has compared his Sheffield Wednesday teammate Will Keane to Dimitar Berbatov after the striker scored his first professional goal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Cardiff City.

Keane is on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season and salvaged a point for the Owls after blasting in a 75th minute penalty.

Vermijl joined Keane at Wednesday after completing a deadline day move from United for an undisclosed fee. He praised Keane and said he knows all about what the 22-year-old can do.

Speaking about Keane, Vermijl said: “I was happy Will got on the score-sheet against Cardiff. He’s a good friend of mine.

“I know how much that meant to him and how important it was for him to get that first goal. Hopefully he will now kick on from that.

“Will is hard-working but he’s got that flair in his game. At Manchester United, his nickname was Berbatov. We always called him that because his touch was exactly the same as Berbatov’s!”

Keane enjoyed a great run of form for United’s U21s this season but the emergence of James Wilson meant opportunities were limited under Louis van Gaal.

The Englishman suffered a cruciate ligament injury in 2012 which hampered his progress. Prior to the injury, Keane was prolific for the U21s and there were growing calls for him to be included in the first team.

We’ll be keeping up to date with Keane’s progress and will be bringing you updates on his situation as and when we get them.
