The 29-year-old hasn’t scored in his last eight matches having been used as a deeper lying central midfielder and fans are keen to see him return to his natural position as a striker.
Although Van Gaal seems to have a preference for Rooney in a deeper role, Scholes is under no illusions where he thinks Rooney’s best position is.
“Rooney has got to play up front,” Scholes said on BT Sport’s Fletch & Sav show.
“To give energy, to give goals. He scores goals and makes goals. He’s been stuck out on the right side of midfield doing nothing really. He’s not getting in the box.
“In the game against West Ham on Sunday he didn’t get a touch in the area. This is Wayne Rooney. How many goals has he scored for Man United and England?”
Scholes has previously said Rooney should play in midfield for England as a one-off but he has failed to settle in a position where he is clearly uncomfortable.
Rooney is playing the Scholes role in midfield but doing so badly and like the man himself said, there’s only place he should be starting for Man United and that is up front.
You’d understand van Gaal’s preference to play Rooney in midfield if van Persie and Falcao were on top form but both players are firing blanks, which makes the Rooney situation even more mysterious.
