Jonny Evans’ performance against Burnley leaves Manchester United fans lost for words

by Richard Laverty

Jonny Evans was once upon a time a talented young defender at Old Trafford when he emerged in the starting line-up during the 2008-09 season.

He was more than a match for stalwarts such as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic but Evans’ recent performances have left Manchester United fans not knowing whether to laugh or cry.

All season, Evans has looked far from the experienced head at the back. He has made mistakes, given the ball away and generally made United much weaker at the back.

Against Burnley, it was comical and frustrating at the same time to see the Northern Ireland international fail to deal with the constant threat of a team fighting relegation and supporters appear to have had enough.

With Evans now in his late twenties, supporters can’t use the inexperienced excuse and it is accepted the defender won’t improve on his current form at Old Trafford.

Whilst he has been a good squad member down the years and supporters would wish him well if/when he leaves, most will hope he’s one of the first out of the door in the summer if his current form continues when he is called upon to play.
