Pictures – Man United 3-1 Burnley: Smalling turns into goalscoring hero

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United climbed to third in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Burnley on Wednesday night.

Whilst it was far from convincing, given early injuries to Phil Jones and Daley Blind, it was a much needed three points and it looked far from a certainty in the first half.

Chris Smalling‘s early goal seemed to suggest United were in for an easy evening, but Burnley peppered David de Gea‘s goal and got a reward through a Danny Ings header.

The visitors should have had far more but Smalling scored again right on half-time. United improved in the second half and were rewarded their first penalty of the season which Robin van Persie slotted away.

The hosts could have added to their tally but in the end it was the points that mattered.
