Ander Herrera simply makes Manchester United tick

Manchester United fans all collectively groaned when Daley Blind signalled to the bench he had to be substituted against Burnley after suffering a head injury.

Man United fans then collectively cheered when Ander Herrera stripped off on the bench and awaited instructions from Louis van Gaal before coming on to replace the Dutchman.

A player who fans have wanted to see back in the starting XI for a long time, Herrera finally had an opportunity in the Premier League. Was it coincidence that United played so much better with the Spaniard on the field? No.

During the second half, Herrera showed what he was all about. His style of play helped United’s football flow and the fluidity was so much smoother with Herrera helping it along. Prior to his substitution, United’s passing was jagged, unimaginative and docile.

We’ve already banged the drum on more than one occasion but it’s really hard not to be frustrated that Herrera isn’t starting for Man United. Yes, the team is currently on a run of only one loss in 18 games but the football is currently littered with problems, problems which Herrera could solve.

The team isn’t taking enough calculated risks with expansive passing? That’s Herrera’s bread and butter.

Van Gaal wants more balance? There isn’t a midfielder in Man United’s squad who has more qualities as an all-rounder than Herrera, yet he continues to be overlooked.

It’s not the first cameo Herrera has impressed in which means there’s no guarantee he will start against Preston on Monday but it must be considered a case of when and not if he becomes a regular starter for Man United again.
