Diego Forlan believes Manchester United target Diego Godin is one of the world’s best defenders

Former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan believes his international team-mate Diego Godin is ‘good enough to play for any team in the world’ in his latest column discussing the talents of the Atletico defender.

Godin has been constantly linked with a move to United after emerging as a top class centre-back under Diego Simeone and the club were linked with making a move during the recent January window.

Forlan, who left Old Trafford in 2004 just as he was hitting some form the club, believes Godin is one of the best in the world and seems certain he’d do well at United despite turning 29 on Monday.

“My compatriot Diego Godin is one of the best defenders in the world, good enough to play for any team in any league,” said the striker.

“In 2014, he had a better year than any other defender. He scored the goal in Camp Nou against Barcelona that won Atletico Madrid the league title on the final day.

“He scored in the UEFA Champions League final and very nearly won the European Cup.

“At the World Cup, he scored for Uruguay against Italy to take us into the knockout stages – with his neck.

“Was there a better central defensive partnership in club football than Godin and the Brazilian Miranda last season? Yet he was not named in the Fifa FIFPro World XI team of the year.”

Godin was crucial to Atletico last season, scoring the goal that clinched them the La Liga title as well the goal that put them ahead in the Champions League final. Undoubtedly a leader and a great defender, Forlan was disappointed to see him miss out on the recent team of the year for 2014.

With United now looking forwards their targets for the summer, Godin may still be one of the clubs top defensive targets when the window re-opens in July, but it may rest on Louis van Gaal‘s ability to guide United back to the Champions League.
