Neville: Rooney will play anywhere and not complain

Gary Neville has hailed the versatility of Wayne Rooney and labelled him as somebody who always does the job for the team.

Rooney, 29, became a makeshift defensive midfielder against Burnley in midweek and across the season has featured as an attacking midfielder, striker and central midfielder.

His versatility has always been a reason why he is such a good all-rounder and having played alongside him, Neville backed Rooney to perform wherever he is asked to.

“I played with Wayne for many many years and he’ll play left wing, he’ll play right wing, he’ll play wherever you ask him to play and he never complains,” Neville said.

“He always does the job for the team, he’s a team man.”

One thing you can’t currently fault Rooney on is his application and enthusiasm but he’s being wasted as a utility man acting as a plaster to cover up the cracks in Man United’s side.

John O’Shea was a jack of all trades and a master of none. Rooney was a master up front at his peak and has now become the jack of all trades simply because he’s willing to play anywhere. In that sense, his versatility has almost become a weakness.

From a fans’ perspective there are no two ways about it – Rooney should be starting up front. Now Robin van Persie is a doubt to face Preston on Monday, Rooney could be given a recently rare opportunity to play in his natural position up front.
