Michael Carrick has likened Angel di Maria’s direct attacking style of play to that of Ryan Giggs.
The South American is slowly coming back into form having suffered a lull after his injuries and his performance against Burnley last week showcased some of his best attributes where he was able to attack empty spaces.
It’s high praise from Carrick to compare di Maria to Giggs given how much he did for the club and is a testament to how much quality he has.
“There are players who have got tricks and can drop the shoulder to go past players, but he is so direct in his play,” Carrick said.
“It is almost like Giggsy used to be in many ways. When he picks that ball up he can carry it and change direction pretty quickly, so it is very tough to defend against – especially if he is going through the middle of the park.
“There aren’t many players who go through the middle. You get wide players who do it, but you don’t see many players dribble through the middle of the pitch.”
In his pomp, Giggs left defenders flat footed. His pace and quick feet made it almost impossible to stop him in full flight (just ask Arsenal’s defence from back in 1999) and last season di Maria was equally as unplayable in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League winning campaign.
So far at United di Maria has enjoyed an electric start followed by a dip and he is now starting to get better again. Louis van Gaal will give di Maria every opportunity to keep improving and he’ll more than likely feature against Preston on Monday night.
