Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has praised Antonio Valencia after the 3-1 FA Cup win against Preston North End on Monday night.

Valencia set up Marouane Fellaini for Man United’s second goal after Ander Herrera had drawn the two sides level at 1-1.

Wayne Rooney eventually sealed the win for United with a late penalty. Van Gaal was pleased with his side’s performance during the game and was particularly happy for Valencia.

Speaking about the game, van Gaal said: ”I think we scored fantastic goals also but were a little bit lucky as well.

“It was good, especially the second goal when [Antonio] Valencia crossed to the far post for Fellaini. I liked it very much because we trained on that a lot. I was very happy for Valencia.”

It was a good result for United in the end but they started the game poorly in what is becoming a familiar trend.

Scott Laird’s goal gave gave Preston the lead and Simon Grayson’s side could have easily added a second with a couple of good chances minutes later.

Despite this United showed plenty of fighting spirit to get back in the game and deserved the victory.

Van Gaal’s decision to put Ashley Young on, in particular, proved decisive for United.
