Louis Saha defends Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has defended Louis van Gaal amid criticism of the team’s playing style.

Man United have employed negative tactics in recent weeks which have limited creativity but made the team more resolute at the back.

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce mocked United after the 1-1 draw between the two sides earlier this month, saying his side couldn’t “cope with long-ball United.”

Saha defended van Gaal, insisting he “understands why United are playing in that way”.

Speaking about the team’s playing style, Saha said: “This season is all about winning games. The philosophy of the manager is to look at it at the end of the season. At the moment it is about results.”

Fans may be frustrated with United’s performances this season but they cannot argue that the approach doesn’t produce results.

United have only lost once in 19 games, are third in the Premier League table and are through to the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Van Gaal has created a team that is incredibly hard to beat and also capable of coming from behind as Monday night’s 3-1 win against Preston North End shows. It may be a policy that United fans will have to accept as the club bids to qualify for the Champions League this season.
