Fans’ view: Michael Carrick or Daley Blind – Who should start when both fit?

by Ben Topliss

It was clear for all to see that Manchester United were crying out for options in midfield last season. Players such as Tom Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa failed to control games under David Moyes and often went missing in the middle of the park.

It was a relief then for fans to see Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera brought into the club. The acquisitions finally gave United some depth in midfield and the team has looked much better for it.

On the other side of the coin, it has left Louis van Gaal with a selection dilemma. His 4-4-2 diamond formation has room for only one defensive midfielder, with Daley Blind occupying the position in recent weeks.

Michael Carrick is currently injured but will want to fill the role upon his return which means van Gaal will have to make the tough choice of deciding which one to play. We asked our Twitter followers for their thoughts on the situation:

Fans are clearly undecided when it comes to whether or not they prefer Blind or Carrick in the role.

Blind has that assured quality about him and is highly intelligent but Carrick has proven time and time again that he can be relied upon in the United midfield.

It remains to be seen what van Gaal will do but it is a nice problem for him to have.
