Louis van Gaal attempted Marco Reus chat prior to Borussia Dortmund extension

Louis van Gaal tried and failed to speak personally with Marco Reus before he signed a new contract extension with Borussia Dortmund, reports German newspaper Bild.

The 25-year-old was widely expected to leave Dortmund thanks to a release clause being in his contract and the German club’s terrible form this season which sees them languishing near the foot of the Bundesliga table.

Despite the circumstances, Reus surprised football fans all the world by signing an extension with Dortmund which removes his release clause and pledged his future to the club.

Bild details interest in Reus from a host of top European clubs including Man United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Man City, which would come as no surprise given that Reus is one of the biggest names in German football.

Wingers are one area where Man United are not spoiled for choice as Angel di Maria, Ashley Young, Adnan Januzaj and Antonio Valencia are the only players who are used to playing with natural width, so somebody of Reus’ ilk would allow van Gaal to adopt a 4-3-3 formation with more confidence.

However, it wasn’t to be, not for his release clause anyway. There’s every chance he could still leave Dortmund in the near future but it will be for an inflated price now that Dortmund negotiated out his release clause.
