Manchester United to wait until summer to renew deals – report

Manchester United will wait until the end of the season before offering new deals to most of the players who will be out of contract in 2016.

ESPN sources report that a number of players at Man United have entered the last 18 months of their current deals at the club including Robin van Persie, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Rafael, Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez, Anders Lindegaard and Nick Powell.

David de Gea completes the list of players who are only contracted to the club until 2016 but his agent Jorge Mendes recently confirmed the Spaniard is in negotiations with United about an extended deal.

The club spent over £100m on all of the players but risk losing them on free transfers if new contracts are not agreed.

It is likely that many would want to stay at Old Trafford as a move elsewhere would be more than likely be considered a step down. ESPN continue by saying United are relaxed about the situation and are prepared to wait until the summer to start negotiations.

Perhaps one of the most pressing decisions that Louis van Gaal will have to make will be regarding the futures of Evans and Jones.

The defenders have suffered from indifferent seasons so far and with United linked with a range of centre-backs it appears their days at the club are numbered. Van Persie will also be concerned about his future given the fact he has been far below his best this season.
