Manchester United legend Gary Neville insists the club were right to sign Angel di Maria over Alexis Sanchez last summer.
Both players enjoyed good starts to life in England. Di Maria scored three times in his opening five games while Sanchez got on the score-sheet twice.
Their fortunes have contrasted since, with Di Maria struggling as Sanchez lights up the Premier League. Despite this, Neville said he would have signed Di Maria over Sanchez at the start of the season.
Speaking about the duo, Neville said: “Obviously Sanchez has had a far bigger impact and a better season than Di Maria. But if you would have asked me at the start of the season; Sanchez or Di Maria – I would have said Di Maria.
“I like Sanchez as well, but I would have said Di Maria at the start of the season.
“Di Maria and [Luke] Shaw will prove to be fantastic signings for United, but they just need to perform to the level and they [Man United] need to get the best out of them.”
Sanchez has gone on to bag an impressive 12 goals in the league but Neville is right that Di Maria looked to be the better player before the season started.
The Argentine had terrorised defences at Real Madrid and was Man of the Match as the club won the Champions League. He continued this form at the World Cup where he helped his country get to the final.
He was exactly the type of player that United needed in order to inject some much needed impetus into their midfield and although Di Maria is having a tough time of late, fans are still confident he will turn out to be an excellent signing for Louis van Gaal.
