Jesse Lingard praised by Steve McClaren for ‘great’ goal against Charlton

Jesse Lingard scored his first goal on-loan at Derby County last night in their 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic.

The 22-year-old scored Derby’s second of the game to give them a win which helps them keep their place atop the Championship table ahead of Middlesbrough.

Having impressed with some strong performances in his early appearances for the club, it’s great to see Lingard get among the goals out on-loan.

Summarising Lingard’s goal, the Derby Telegraph said: “Hendrick was the provider this time, as he slid a pass into the path of Lingard, who beat Stephen Henderson with a first-time finish from 12 yards.”

Derby boss Steve McClaren was certainly happy with Lingard’s goal and hailed the quality of his finish.

“The goals both came from fantastic football,” he told Derby’s official website.

“You won’t find better goals tonight in any game.

“The goals we scored were excellent and came from great passing; great control and superb finishes.

“Jeff (Hendrick) was excellent tonight and both him and Jesse (Lingard) finished the chances brilliantly.

“Jesse has been itching to start and he has deserved it. It was a great move leading to his goal and it was a great finish too.”

Having signed a new permanent and improved deal with United prior to joining Derby on loan, he has made all the right noises with the Championship club.

As is always the case with serious injuries, players can sometimes never recover but the early signs for Lingard is that he’ll be back next season just as sharp as he was last summer.

With Derby chasing automatic promotion, Lingard is playing in the best possible place he could out on loan and if he can help steer the Rams to the title, he’ll return to Old Trafford having won the Championship which is something not many, or any, United youngsters can say.
