Gary Neville: Manchester United’s big players have to improve

by Sam Peoples

Gary Neville wants Manchester United’s big name players to step up and improve from now until the end of the season.

The likes of Angel di Maria and Robin van Persie have enjoyed good form in patches but they are also guilty of putting in average performances.

Elsewhere, Radamel Falcao really hasn’t got going this season and Wayne Rooney has gone off the boil since being pushed back into midfield.

All in all, the big name players at United simply haven’t done enough this year to warrant their reputation and Neville wants to see that change.

“I still think Manchester United will finish in the top four, he added.

“I think they will scrape in.

“At the start of the season I thought they’d finish third.

“There is a period in March where they have Arsenal in an FA Cup quarter-final, then they have Spurs the Sunday after and Liverpool after that. There is an international break and then they have got Aston Villa, Man City and Chelsea.

“That will be a big period but, actually, Van Gaal and Man United started the season really poorly and these big games came along and they seemed to grow.

“I’d like to think these games will inspire some of the bigger players at Man United. They need to step up their performances. There is no doubt about that.”

A team which can boast a front four of Van Persie, Falcao, Rooney and Di Maria should strike fear into any team in the world but they aren’t currently singing from the same hymn sheet which has led to disjointed and ambled team performances.

With a hugely difficult March ahead of Man United which includes games against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Liverpool, now is the time for United’s attack to click into shape.

For the players themselves, they also need to show Louis van Gaal they deserve a place in his squad next year so on an individual basis, they still have a lot to prove between now and May.
