Fans’ view: Will Reece James play his way into Manchester United’s team?

by Ben Topliss

With Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett handed new deals at Manchester United recently, it was only a matter of time until there was an update on Reece James.

The youngster has now signed a contract extension having been introduced to Man United’s first-team during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States and scored twice against LA Galaxy.

James clearly impressed Louis van Gaal and he was handed his competitive debut in the League Cup against MK Dons. United lost the game 4-0 in what was a highly embarrassing result, but James continued to work hard and earned himself a loan move to Rotherham.

Since returning to United, James has been a vital part of Warren Joyce’s U21s side. McNair and Blackett have proven that young players can make the step up and we asked our Twitter followers if they think James can do the same:

Overall, the feeling among fans is that it will be tough for him to break through into United’s first-team, which it no doubt will, but those who have regularly watched him in the U21s know how consistent and reliable he is, so there’s plenty of hope he can become a regular in the future.

Looking towards the future, James will be delighted with his new contract and no doubt looking forward to pushing on next season.
