Louis van Gaal believes Tyler Blackett has the ability to become a great defender for Manchester United.

The club announced a new deal for Blackett today which will keep him at the club until at least June 2017, with an option to extend for a further year.

The 20-year-old follows in the footsteps of Paddy McNair, who also signed a new deal tying him down to United earlier this month.

Van Gaal said he was happy to see another youngster commit himself to United and insisted Blackett has the talent to play a big part in United’s future.

Speaking about Blackett, van Gaal said: “I am delighted that Tyler [Blackett] has signed a new contract. He is another young player that has risen through the Academy system to break into the first-team squad this season.

“Tyler has great potential and I believe he is at the right club to continue his development and progression to become a great defender.”

Van Gaal clearly believes in United’s youngsters and has given them a number of opportunities to prove themself during the campaign.

Along with McNair and Blackett, James Wilson, Adnan Januzaj and Luke Shaw have often been included in United’s starting XI.
