Manchester United vs Sunderland: Potential 3-5-2: James Wilson starts up front

by Ben Topliss

There have been reports that Manchester United striker James Wilson suffered a dead leg whilst playing for the U21s on Monday night but it is a relatively minor injury from which he should recover quickly.

With Robin van Persie definitely out of Saturdays’s game against Sunderland, Louis van Gaal may well give Wilson a chance to impress up front.

Such a move would certainly give Radamel Falcao more freedom to express himself, as the Colombian is too similar to van Persie to work with him effectively.

Van Gaal has shown he favours pragmatism over creativity however and may well revert to the much maligned 3-5-2 formation after last weekend’s 2-1 defeat against Swansea City.

The line up would allow Wayne Rooney to operate in the space behind Falcao and Wilson and he should be able to thread them in with his range of passing.

Rafael could return to the starting XI, which would inject some much needed impetus down United’s right flank. Paddy McNair and Antonio Valencia, while hard working, aren’t the best offensively.
