Reece James signs Manchester United contract extension

Manchester United have announced Reece James has had his contract with the club extended.

The 21-year-old was introduced to Man United’s first team during last summer’s pre-season tour of the United States and impressively scored twice against LA Galaxy despite playing in a wing-back role.

James was named on the bench for the opening three Premier League games of the season before being handed his competitive debut by Louis van Gaal in the Capital One Cup against MK Dons.

Although that particular match ended in a disappointing 4-0 defeat, James continued to put in some good performances and earned himself a short-term move to Rotherham in November in order to help his development.

Since returning to United, James has been a crucial part of Warren Joyce’s U21s side and helped the team earn a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Monday night.

James isn’t the only youngster to be rewarded with fresh terms today as Tyler Blackett has also signed a new deal.

Van Gaal clearly has faith in his young players and it is good to see them getting opportunities at the club.

An extremely flexible and confident player, James’ reliability and versatility means he should be able to get plenty of opportunities in the goodness of time under van Gaal.
