Robin van Persie set to miss several weeks with ankle injury

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Robin van Persie is Manchester United’s only injured player after the return of Michael Carrick and James Wilson.

Carrick returned to training this week after overcoming a muscle rupture while Wilson has recovered from a dead leg.

Van Persie will remain out of action however after suffering an ankle injury against Swansea City last weekend, with some reports suggesting he could be out of action for up to six weeks.

Van Gaal refused to put a timeframe on van Persie’s return and said fans will have to wait to see him back in the starting XI.

Speaking about United’s injuries, van Gaal said: ”Now Robin van Persie is the only injured player because [Michael] Carrick trained yesterday for the first time with the group, but he has an ankle injury now, so we will have to wait and see how long that shall take. James Wilson is available.”

Van Gaal is yet to have the luxury of a fully fit squad this season so the news about van Persie will come as a blow.

Some fans have suggested that the Dutchman’s injury could be a blessing in disguise for United as he has put in some increasingly mediocre performances this term.

However, it is not as if the rest of United’s strike-force are in form with Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao experiencing tough times of late.
