Ander Herrera backs Robin van Persie’s quality

Ander Herrera has given his support to out of form striker Robin van Persie with the Manchester United man currently struggling for goals.

Van Persie will miss the next couple of weeks after picking up an ankle injury at Swansea City last week but despite relative poor form, was still the first man to hit double figures at Old Trafford this season.

That tally was matched by fellow striker Wayne Rooney against Sunderland on Saturday and if Louis van Gaal decides to stick with the 4-3-3 system that worked in the second half against Sunderland, van Persie may struggle to get back in the team unless Rooney is moved back into midfield.

Whilst van Persie has struggled for overall form, he has continued to show his class in front of goal at various points across the season and Herrera sees the good qualities the Dutchman possesses.

“When he plays with his back to goal, he holds the ball up for the team,” he said.

“His ‘orientation control’ is good – controlling the ball when it comes at an angle. He is always making feints to lose the defender. When the ball is in front of the goal with Van Persie, it is 99%, 100% goal.”

United have looked static with van Persie and Radamel Falcao paired together up front and the team as a whole looked much livelier with a single striker flanked by Adnan Januzaj and Ashley Young on the wing.

Whether he returns to the starting XI after his injury remains to be seen but if Rooney and Falcao can find some goalscoring form, it would be difficult to see the Dutchman being afforded that luxury by van Gaal.

There are also questions currently being asked over van Persie’s long term future as his contract expires in just over a year and there has been no word on whether the striker will receive a new deal.
