Man United vs Newcastle: Potential 4-3-3 formation with Rooney up top

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United head into Wednesday nights game against Newcastle with another potential system up their sleeves.

Against Sunderland, United played a 4-3-3 with two wingers, arguably the first time Louis van Gaal had used the system since back-to-back games against Chelsea and Manchester City in 2014.

United struggled with Radamel Falcao’s lack of movement up front but had plenty of pace and width, regularly utilising the impressive duo Adnan Januzaj and Ashley Young on the wings with Wayne Rooney deployed as the sole striker.

Whilst Angel Di Maria was substituted at half-time, it’s expected the midfielder will come back into the team although van Gaal may see it as the perfect opportunity to take him out of the limelight and rest him for Monday’s FA Cup tie against Arsenal.

If Di Maria’s isn’t played in his usual midfield slot, it could see Wayne Rooney once again play as the top midfielder with Radamel Falcao or even James Wilson starting as the lone striker.

Whilst United could revert back to their diamond system, it would be a surprise given the success of the 4-3-3 against Sunderland on Saturday.
