Jorge Mendes to fly to Manchester for David de Gea contract talks

Jorge Mendes will arrive in England this week in order to try and finalise a £140,000-a-week contract for Manchester United keeper David de Gea.

Reports have suggested Man United are close to agreeing a £7.28million-a-year deal for De Gea with his agent Mendes which would make him the highest-paid keeper in the world. However, neither party can agree on a buyout clause for the contract, with United valuing the 24-year-old at £50m.

Mendes is mindful of Real Madrid’s strong interest in the player and would like the figure to be closer to £35m.

United are also yet to agree on the length of the new deal. De Gea has 16 months left on his current contract and the club are anxious to tie down the Spaniard.

Securing De Gea’s long term future is going to be one of United’s most important deals this year as he has become such an indispensable player in Louis van Gaal‘s side. The fact he publicly quashed false reports about falling out with United’s boss was good to see but now that we’re in March, there needs to be more progression with regards to his new contract.

Ander Herrera rightly labelled De Gea as one of the world’s best goalkeeper and although bringing in new players will be a big focus for United in the summer, not losing De Gea to Real Madrid is equally as important.

Mendes will also more than likely press United for a decision on Radamel Falcao while he is in Manchester but he has struggled so far at Old Trafford, leading to plenty of questions as to whether a long-term deal is the right move.
