The La Plata derby is one of the most passionately contested derbies in Argentine football. Played between local clubs Estudiantes and Gimnasia, the fixture evokes heartfelt support from the fans of both clubs.
Born in La Plata, Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is a fan of Estudiantes and spent eight years there as a youth player there between 2000 and 2008.
It is fair to say then that Rojo has strong emotional ties to the club and he certainly showed that on Sunday night while watching the latest edition of the derby.
Ezequiel Cerutti scored from the spot to seal a 3-1 victory for Estudiantes after goals from Jonathan Schunke, and Guido Carrillo had put them in a strong position and Rojo was delighted with the strike.
Reacting like any other fan would, Rojo jumped out of his seat and punched the air. You certainly can’t fault his passion but there might be a few eyebrows raised for the fact he wore a Barcelona training top. Poor choice there, Marcos.
Rojo played against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon and produced a good performance in the 2-0 win. He will be looking to continue his good run of form against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
