Wayne Rooney named in WhoScored’s Premier League Team of the Week

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been named in WhoScored.com’s Premier League Team of the Week following his brace in the 2-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday.

The striker opened the scoring from the spot after Radamel Falcao was brought down inside the box.

He then added a second late on with a header into an unguarded net after Adnan Januzaj’s low shot was parried into his path by Costel Pantilimon.

It was an impressive performance from Rooney and it was rightly recognised by WhoScored:

The 29-year-old has been played in midfield by Louis van Gaal for large parts of this season and his goals against Sunderland were actually his first of 2015.

Despite widespread criticism of Rooney in midfield van Gaal persisted with him in the role until an injury to Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao’s poor form forced his hand.

Rooney has proven time and time again over the course of his career that he is a goalscorer and his brace against Sunderland came as no surprise to fans. Prior to the game van Gaal said United were missing a striker capable of scoring 20 goals in a season but he will have one simply if he plays Rooney in his natural position.
