Louis van Gaal reflects on previous Newcastle United clash

Louis van Gaal has reflected on Manchester United’s previous game against Newcastle United prior to the next meeting between the two sides on Wednesday night.

Man United won the Boxing Day fixture 3-1 thanks to Wayne Rooney’s brace and a strike from Robin van Persie.

The win took United’s unbeaten run to eight but their fortunes have suffered since then. Van Persie is currently injured, while performances have not been up to scratch in recent games.

Van Gaal said United deserved the win and that he was particularly impressed by Rooney during the clash.

Speaking about the victory, van Gaal said: “I remember the fantastic goal Wayne Rooney made after a fantastic counter.

“I have seen it again, as always before a match, and I think we played well. The win was well deserved: we could have scored more, but it is always like that.”

United will be hoping to replicate the result when they play at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Rooney started in midfield in the previous game but van Persie’s injury will give him another chance to impress up front. The United captain was there for the game against Sunderland last weekend and scored twice in a 2-0 victory.
