Manchester United loan watch: Nani has tough week, Keane scores again

by Phil Shearer

Nani endured a torrid week as Sporting were humbled 3-0 by Porto in the league and were held to a 0-0 draw with Wolfsburg in the Europa League during last week. Nani completed 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card along the way as Porto ran out comfortable winners against Sporting. He was left bloodied and bruised in the 0-0 draw with Wolfsburg which saw Sporting crash out of the competition.

Will Keane continued his fine run of form for Sheffield Wednesday as they picked up an impressive 2-0 win over high-flyers Middlesbrough. Keane headed home after Lewis McGugan’s freekick came back off the post. He was substituted in the last five minutes to a standing ovation from the Wednesday faithful.

Javier Hernandez made a ten minute cameo appearance as Real Madrid drew 1-1 with Villarreal. Hernandez came on for Karim Benzema for the last ten minutes of the game and was unable to make any significant impact. The result allowed Barcelona to close the gap at the top of the La Liga table.

Tom Cleverley was back in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI but this didn’t prevent Aston Villa from slipping to a 1-0 defeat. Cleverley completed the full 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card in the second half in what was a poor performance from struggling Villa.

Ben Amos kept a clean sheet as Neil Lennon’s Bolton Wanderers side picked up an important 1-0 win over Brighton. Amos has started Bolton’s last two games and has now extended his loan at the club by one month. Saidy Janko was an unused substitute in this game.

Jesse Lingard only completed 45 minutes as Derby County slipped to a rare 2-0 defeat to lowly Fulham. Lingard was replaced at half time but did manage to pick up a yellow card in his first half appearance.

Sam Johnstone picked up a clean sheet as Preston strolled to a convincing 4-0 win over Oldham. This impressive away performance continues Preston’s push for automatic promotion from League One.

Ben Pearson completed the full 90 minutes and created the only goal in Barnsley’s 1-0 win over Gillingham. It was Pearson’s parried shot that was turned home by George Waring to give Barnsley their narrow victory, Pearson managed to pick up a yellow card along the way.

Angelo Henriquez scored a penalty before being substituted on 75 minutes as Dinamo Zagreb beat 2-0 at the weekend, continuation of Henriquez’s impressive form in front of goal.

Guillermo Varela completed 90 minutes as Real Madrid Castilla were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against Leioa. The result sees them drop to second place in the Segunda B table.

Joe Rothwell was an unused substitute in Blackpool’s 3-1 defeat to Wigan.

The midweek games will be covered in next week’s loan watch.
