With Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all winning anything less than victory would be considered a failure for United so Young’s winner came as a huge relief to fans.
Van Gaal was delighted with the result but said United should have had the game won much sooner.
Speaking about the match, van Gaal said: ”I think we have dominated for 90 minutes, maybe our best match of the season, especially in an away match we deserved the victory.
“We didn’t reward ourselves in the first half. It was a narrow escape because our rivals have won also so it’s a rat race.
“We have created a lot of chances and could have scored much earlier. They also made two big chances and I think David de Gea rescued us at that time.
“It was a crazy run from Wayne Rooney, a lost ball, that shows the fighting spirit in this team. We want to win. All my changes were to win, not to hold the result.”
United’s result leaves United fourth in the Premier League, two points ahead of Liverpool.
The ‘rat race’, as van Gaal calls it, is really hotting up and United cannot afford to drop many more points this season. Van Gaal’s side have a tough run of fixtures coming up in March and April but fans will take heart from their good run of two defeats in 22 games.
