Shaw was replaced by Marcos Rojo at left-back in the starting XI and was left out of the match day squad altogether against the Magpies.
It is the latest in a series of injury setbacks for Shaw, who has endured a stop start debut season at Old Trafford having joined for £27m in the summer.
Van Gaal said he may have made the team against Newcastle if Shaw was available but insisted he wouldn’t risk any player by bringing them back too aearly.

The Dutchman did not give any indication over whether or not Shaw would be available for Monday night’s FA Cup clash with Arsenal.
The 19-year-old limped off after just 16 minutes in United’s previous clash against Arsenal earlier this season. In his absence, United went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney’s striker and an own goal from Kieran Gibbs. Shaw’s injury record hasn’t become a worry for United fans just yet but they will certainly want to see him get an extended run in the team.
