Louis van Gaal: Angel di Maria deserved sending off against Arsenal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Angel di Maria can have no complaints after the Argentine received two yellow cards in the space of a minute in the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal on Monday night.

Di Maria had initially been booked for diving but was shown a second after he immediately grabbed the shirt of referee Michael Oliver.

The episode compounded a tough few weeks for Di Maria, who had been substituted early in United’s last two games against Sunderland and Newcastle United.

Van Gaal said Di Maria deserved to see red and that he can have no excuses over the dismissal.

Speaking about the sending off, van Gaal said: ”In Spain he knows that he doesn’t touch the referee, but that is also in his emotion. I’ve already spoken with him, he knows my opinion but also I have to see on the video.

“I think he’s touched the referee and that’s forbidden in every country, so he has no excuses.”

It was a huge error of judgement for Di Maria to touch Oliver but he actually played well during the match.

His assist for Wayne Rooney’s equaliser, a wonderful, whipped ball into the box, was a real moment of quality in the match and something much more befitting of a £59m player. As it panned out, it was a night to forget for the 27-year-old.
