Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown believes Manchester United’s Angel di Maria has had no support at Old Trafford and that his red card in the 2-1 defeat to the Gunners was bound to happen eventually.
Di Maria played quiet well against Arsenal in the FA Cup meeting between the two sides on Monday night and set up Wayne Rooney’s equaliser.
However, the midfielder was dismissed late on against Arsene Wenger’s side for receiving two yellow cards in quick succession and that is what will be remembered by fans.
Keown believes Di Maria is short on confidence and attacks United players by suggesting nobody supported him through his rough patch.
Speaking about Di Maria, Keown said: ”I think he’s been an accident waiting to happen Angel Di Maria in the last few weeks.
“But, how much help has Di Maria had? The manager [Louis van Gaal] has picked him, but what kind of support has he had from everyone around the club to look out for him?”
Di Maria has been suffering from a huge dip in form in recent months and looks anything but a £59m player. The Argentine was substituted early in United’s previous two games against Newcastle United and Sunderland after ineffectual displays.
Due to his price-tag, Di Maria has come in for some criticism but, in his defence, the whole team hasn’t really been up to the required level either, so there is some collective responsibility in that regard.
However, there is no denying that Di Maria’s current performances simply aren’t good enough, especially when you consider how electric he was at the start of the season and going into a tough run of games, fans are hoping he can recapture his early season form.
