Manchester United U18s coach Paul McGuinness has been happy with Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s progression but says there is a lot more to come from the youngster.
Fosu-Mensah joined Man United from Ajax last summer and has impressed since he received international clearance to play for the club.
A physical presence on and off the ball, the Netherlands U17 captain put in a standout performance in the U18s FA Youth Cup Fourth Round victory over Hull City earlier this season with Louis van Gaal watching in the stands.
McGuinness has been impressed by Fosu-Mensah during his brief spell at United and says he has all the attributes to develop into a top player.
Speaking about Fosu-Mensah, McGuinness said: “He’s physically ahead of a lot of players at this age group and is very dynamic and powerful. That makes a big difference to any team, having someone with that maturity in it.
“He’s added defensively with his ability to recover and win the ball and also with his quick bursts forward. He has been a good addition but there is quite a lot more to come.
“There are things we need to work on with him and, once he gets a full idea of the Manchester United training mentality and Manchester United way of culture, he could be a good prospect.”
Fosu-Mensah will hope to get United off to a winning start in Group A of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League play-offs.
It is early days for Fosu-Mensah but he has certainly made a good start to life at United. Van Gaal has shown he is not afraid to promote young talent given the fortunes of James Wilson, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett this season and it would be no surprise to see Fosu-Mensah make the step up in the future.
