Nathaniel Clyne to reject Southampton contract to force Manchester United move – report

Nathaniel Clyne is set to reject a new contract offer from Southampton as part of a decision to help push through a move to Manchester United, ESPN reports.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with Man United all year and stalled negotiations with Southampton have helped speculation to continue.

ESPN say Clyne will turn down a new £45,000 a week offer because he has his heart set on joining Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

Having been a problem position all season, van Gaal will be looking to bring in at least one new right-back and Clyne has been one of the best in the Premier League this year, so it’s no surprise to see the links continuing to gather pace.

Players forcing through moves to clubs is not a new phenomenon and a recent example of this happening with United would be Marcos Rojo at Sporting Lisbon.

The Argentinian refused to train with Sporting once he found out about Man United’s interest in order to force through a move and although there were some complications thanks to his part-ownership by a third party, he got his wish with a move to Old Trafford.

One real plus of Clyne forcing through a move would be that it shows his desire to be a United player right from the offset and the importance of that shouldn’t be underestimated because it would be reflected in their performances right from the start.
