Andreas Pereira handed Manchester United debut in the Premier League

Much has been said over the last few weeks with regards to the future of Manchester United youngster Andreas Pereira but Louis van Gaal made a statement of intent against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 19-year-old was given his Premier League debut by van Gaal and replaced the excellent Juan Mata in the second half.

It wasn’t a dead rubber substitution either as although United were 3-0 ahead at the time, Spurs still had plenty to play for, so it was a good opportunity for Pereira to showcase himself.

He didn’t light up the show like he would have hoped but the mere fact he made his Premier League debut should have been enough for Pereira on the day.

That being said, it was enough for Louis van Gaal who praised the young Belgian: “When you’re 19 and playing for Manchester United, you must be very talented. I’m pleased for him.”

Van Gaal’s decision to give Pereira his Premier League debut means the ball is now firmly back in his court with the contract negotiations.

The United boss showed him that opportunities will be presented to him in due course but it is simply a case of whether Pereira is willing to wait and fight for them or if he wants more guarantees about game time which he simply won’t get at a club like United.
