Louis van Gaal hails Michael Carrick after Tottenham Hotspur win

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hailed Michael Carrick after the midfielder played a starring role in the 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Carrick set up Marouane Fellaini for Man United’s opener before getting on the score-sheet himself.

The 33-year-old was composed on the ball and displayed a superb range of passing. Was it not for Fellaini’s display, Carrick would undoubtedly have been United’s Man of the Match.

Van Gaal was equally as impressed and hailed his vice-captain’s influence in the middle of the pitch.

Speaking about Carrick, van Gaal said: ”Michael Carrick is not not my second captain for nothing. He is one of the best passers also, not only wide but also forward.

“We need midfielders who have that passing. When you can also score the second goal you have a big influence in the game.”

Carrick’s influence on United’s play can be summed up pretty easily. When he’s in the team, United do well.

The Englishman stepped it up against Spurs and combined brilliantly with Ander Herrera and Juan Mata during the win. Angel di Maria has always been in the starting XI when fit but Louis van Gaal may be forced into a rethink thanks to their performances.
