Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes the club can overtake Manchester City and finish second in the Premier League this season.
City lost 1-0 to Burnley last weekend and are going through a bad patch of form while Man United registered a superb 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The results have left many fans suggesting that City have been dragged into the battle to qualify for the Champions League.
Carrick says United have the ability to catch second-placed City but insists the team are taking it one game at a time.
When asked if United can finish second this term, Carrick said: ”Yeah, we have got to aim for that. We’re within touching distance now. You look at the table and it is so tight. But I suppose really we’ve just got to look to the game on Sunday [Liverpool].
“There are going to be ups and downs because that is how it is, especially in the last nine or 10 games. Sunday is a big game for a lot of reasons and that is probably all we can focus on at the moment.”
United fans famously have high standards so Carrick is bound to say that the club can catch City but the midfielder and his teammates will know they have to be realistic.
Finishing fourth is an absolute necessity for United, anything less would be classed as a monumental failure. A win against Liverpool on Sunday would go a long way to securing that but anything can happen at Anfield.
