Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes Louis van Gaal doesn’t need to make wholesale changes to his line-up ahead of Sunday’s game with Liverpool.
United go into the game off the back of a 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in what was potentially the team’s best overall performance of the season.
Liverpool are the form team of the division and remarkably haven’t lose a league game since their 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford back in December, and fortunes for both sides have differed ever since.
Whilst Liverpool haven’t lost since, United’s lengthy unbeaten run eventually came to an end in the New Year but the club returned to top form on Sunday, and Neville believes Van Gaal only has one big decision to make.
Club record signing Angel Di Maria is available once again after serving a suspension picked up against Arsenal in the FA Cup last week.
Juan Mata started his first game since the start of February against Tottenham and put in a performance that saw him roundly cheered after he was substituted but the magnitude of the game on Sunday may see Di Maria return.
With United unlikely to enjoy the dominance they had against Spurs or indeed in December’s return fixture, the Argentine’s pace on the break will be crucial and Mata hasn’t set the world alight away from home in a red shirt this season.
Van Gaal’s other decision is whether to bring Luke Shaw back in or not. Daley Blind performed well at left-back against Tottenham and despite Shaw being undisputed first choice, a return to midfield for the Dutchman would mean a return to the bench for one of Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick or Ander Herrera, all of who worked well as a trio in Sunday’s victory.
