Man United loan watch: Cleverley tastes victory, Hernandez’ struggles continue

by Phil Shearer

Tom Cleverley must not know what has hit him having gone from a woeful run of results and his personal form being criticised to three wins out of three games. Cleverley completed the whole 90 minutes, putting in a solid midfield display as Aston Villa hammered Sunderland 4-0 at the Stadium of Light. Cleverley will hope he can continue his run of form to improve his options as he edges closer to an Old Trafford exit in the summer.

Nani has continued his good form, completing 90 minutes as Sporting Lisbon picked up a 1-0 win over Maritimo. Sporting sit third in the Primeira Liga table, eight points behind rivals Porto. Nani will be hoping his impressive season continues and earns him a chance for redemption at United or a move to his desired location in the summer.

Javier Hernandez continues to cut a frustrated figure at the Bernabeu. He was not involved in Real Madrid’s unexpected 4-3 defeat by Schalke in the Champions League last week, however, the Spanish giants still went through to the next round. The diminutive Mexican was then limited to an uneventful 8 minute cameo in Real’s 2-0 win over Levante at the weekend, replacing Karim Benzema in the 82nd minute.

Ben Amos experienced a mixed week at Bolton Wanderers. During last week he was on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against Blackburn Rovers, completing 90 minutes. However, his fortunes changed at the weekend as he completed 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet as Neil Lennon’s Bolton side ran out 2-0 winners over Millwall. Saidy Janko completed 68 minutes of the 1-0 defeat to Blackburn and was not involved in the game against Millwall due to injury.

Will Keane completed just 42 minutes in Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Fulham. The 22-year-old picked up a knock which forced him off before Wednesday took the lead in the 54th minute, only for Fulham to equalise in the 75th.

Sam Johnstone completed 90 minutes, and will be disappointed to have not kept a clean sheet, as Preston North End ran out impressive 5-1 winners over Crewe Alexandra. Preston sit in 2nd place in League One and are unbeaten in 5 games, with Johnstone playing a key role in their form.

Guillermo Varela and Real Madrid Castilla’s miserable form continued as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Huesca. Castilla have now lost their last three matches and have slipped to 7th in the Segunda B table, with Huesca leading the way.

Jesse Lingard was an unused substitute in Derby County’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City at the weekend. While Ben Pearson sat out Blackpool’s 4-0 thumping at the hands of Bournemouth. Angelo Henriquez was another absentee as he missed Dinamo Zagreb’s last ditch equaliser to rescue a point in a 1-1 draw with Hajduk Split.
