The Man United captain has flourished since then and has gone on to score five goals in his last six games.
Against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, Rooney’s strike rounded off a performance in which United played some of their best football of the season.
Despite this, the Manchester Evening News reports that van Gaal is still ready to move Rooney back to midfield, even as a holding player if required.
The Dutchman acknowledges that Rooney is currently United’s best striker but believes the 29-year-old can give his side options in midfield that no other player can.
Fans would be against Rooney’s reprisal in midfield as he has had a minimal impact on games in the position.
It was certainly an odd move by van Gaal to use Rooney midfield on a semi-permanent basis, particularly as United had brought in the likes of Daley Blind and Ander Herrera last summer to add depth in the middle of the park. Van Gaal isn’t happy with his options as United have been linked with the likes of Paul Pogba and Kevin Strootman throughout this campaign.
