Manchester United’s Potential XI vs Liverpool: Di Maria returns

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United face one of their biggest and most important games of the season this weekend and it happens to come against Liverpool.

Whilst a trip to Anfield is always a nerve-racking experience, in recent seasons it has meant little bar pride given the differing fortunes of both sides.

This season, a win for either will be crucial in the race to get back in the top four but United will know Liverpool face their other top four rivals in Arsenal a fortnight later.

United’s performance against Tottenham on Sunday will give Louis van Gaal plenty to think about. The team’s best performance of the season came without club record signing Angel di Maria, it would be harsh to drop Juan Mata. Herein lies van Gaal’s dilemma for Sunday.

Di Maria’s pace on the counter will be important, especially given Liverpool will line up with a narrow back three, so the Argentinian should get plenty of room, as should Ashley Young on the left.

For this reason, Daley Blind should also continue at left-back. Whilst Luke Shaw‘s pace would combat Raheem Sterling, Shaw is struggling for fitness and Blind doesn’t deserve to be dropped after his performance on Sunday.

It also means he can help Young, the Dutchman’s crosses were accurate on Sunday and it will allow Marcos Rojo to return to the centre of defence.

Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera can all continue where they left off with the in-form Wayne Rooney up front.
