Manchester United’s potential 3-5-2 for Liverpool – Angel di Maria left out

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United will know it is vital that they come away from Anfield with a positive result when they take on Liverpool on Sunday.

The ‘rat race’ to finish in top four, as Louis van Gaal likes to call it, is hotting up and the fixture between the two sides will go a long way to deciding who will qualify for the Champions League next season.

Fans would not like it but Louis van Gaal may be thinking about reverting to a 3-5-2 formation as a result.

The team often employed the formation during the early part of the season, with the team looking far more solid defensively at the cost of attacking fluidity.

If van Gaal does go for the tactic, Radamel Falcao may be partnered with Wayne Rooney up top. The Colombian is due a big performance and fans would forgive his disappointing spell at Old Trafford should he get the winner in Liverpool’s back yard.

Elsewhere, Juan Mata may operate in the hole following his impressive performance in the 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, while Rafael could provide width and an attacking outlet down United’s right flank. Mata’s inclusion would mean Angel di Maria didn’t make an immediate return to the starting XI either.

It’s a tough selection for van Gaal this weekend because he’s got to find the delicate team balance which an away trip to Anfield needs.
