Manchester United consider Aymeric Laporte move – report

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United are considering a summer move for Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte, who has a €42m release clause.

Laporte has long been admired by Louis van Gaal as the Dutchman looks to improve Man United’s options in central defence.

Jonny Evans has had a poor season at Old Trafford, while Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been in and out of the side through injury, meaning Marcos Rojo is the only player who has brought any sort of regular stability and even he has been injured.

According to the Guardian, Laporte may be tempted to consider a move to England despite previously saying he was happy at Bilbao.

However, Bilbao are notoriously difficult to negotiate with and it is unlikely they will sell Laporte for any lower than his release clause.

The two clubs agreed the transfer of Ander Herrera to United last summer but the Spanish club initially rejected an offer of €36m in a show of strength to fans.

Laporte may be worth the hassle as he is regarded as one of the world’s brightest young talents. The Frenchman is only 20-years-old but is already an established member of Bilbao’s first-team squad. Louis van Gaal has trusted the likes of Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett in the first-team this season but Laporte would be a big improvement on United’s current defensive options.
