Louiss van Gaal confirms Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw not fit to start against Liverpool

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed that defensive duo Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw are not fit enough to start against Liverpool on Sunday.

Rojo, who joined for £16m, has been struggling with a problem he picked up in the FA Cup defeat to Arsenal earlier this month while Shaw, who joined for £27m, is not yet 100%.

Both players would likely have started had they been fit so their absence at Anfield will come as a blow to van Gaal.

“I don’t think they are fit to play, but maybe on the bench. I have to see how they are,” van Gaal told reporters this afternoon.

Instead, Daley Blind will fill in at left-back while Phil Jones and Chris Smalling continue their partnership at the heart of defence.

Blind produced a fine performance against Spurs in the position and fans will be hoping for more of the same from the Dutchman.

On the flip side, a club of United’s stature should not really be relying on a midfielder to occupy a defensive position.

Van Gaal is reportedly looking to add some depth to his squad, with Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez linked with United in recent weeks.
