De Gea in Spain squad but Mata and Herrera miss out

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea has received another call-up to the Spanish national team for their upcoming Euro 2016 fixture against Ukraine.

De Gea will also come up against club team mate Daley Blind when Spain face the Netherlands in a friendly a few days later and it now appears De Gea is the main back-up to Iker Casillas.

On current form, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see United’s number one become Spain’s number one but Vicente Del Bosque has appeared reluctant to drop Casillas in recent games.

De Gea was regularly out of the squad with current United number two Victor Valdes and former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina preferred but neither have made a squad since the 2014 World Cup, earlier for Valdes.

The 24-year-old made his debut for his national team last year and has 3 caps to his name but it appears just a matter of time before that number starts to rocket.

On the other hand, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera have both failed to make the squad. It’s no surprise Mata hasn’t given his lack of playing time but more performances like the ones vs Spurs and he’ll be back in the reckoning.

Despite good form, Herrera has yet to be called up for his national team but with the midfield including names such as Silva, Iniesta, Fabregas, Busquets and co, it shows the strength in depth Del Bosque has at his disposal.
