Juan Mata puts in excellent shift for Manchester United against Liverpool

He came from Uruguay, he made the Scousers cry! Manchester United fans still sing about Diego Forlan’s match-winning brace against Liverpool at Anfield in 2002 and rightly so.

Forlan’s performance against the old enemy was fantastic and undoubtedly the highlight of an otherwise indifferent spell at Man United.

On Sunday, Juan Mata produced an equally as emphatic performance against Liverpool, also scoring a brace as he proved to be United’s match winner in a 2-1 win.

Excellent from the first whistle, Mata more than vindicated Louis van Gaal’s decision to include him in the starting XI ahead of Angel di Maria.

Mata’s second goal in particular, a wonderful acrobatic volley, was a magnificent finish which will live long in the memory.

It was the Spaniard’s finest performance in a United shirt and one that may make it impossible for van Gaal to leave him out of the team. Forlan eventually left United for Villarreal following a frustrating few years at Old Trafford but fans will be hoping Mata stays at the club for years to come.
