Player Ratings: Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United: Super Juan Mata the star man

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 6 Had a quieter afternoon than he might have expected but will think he should have done more for Liverpool’s strike

Antonio Valencia 6 Did a very solid job defensively and helped United in attack, especially on the break.

Chris Smalling 6 Had a few sloppy moments but overall played his part in keeping Liverpool at arm’s length

Phil Jones 7 Was clumsy to be booked but overall had an excellent game, regularly cut out Liverpool attacks

Daley Blind 6 Had a few hairy moments but he did what was needed and won United a late penalty.

Michael Carrick 7 He was caught out for Liverpool’s goal but otherwise once again showed why he has been so important to Van Gaal.

Ander Herrera 7 Another classy display from the Spaniard, he is settling into life in England nicely and made United tick.

Marouane Fellaini 6 Did his job, nothing spectacular but what was asked of him.

Juan Mata 9 What a performance. Van Gaal kept him in and was duly rewarded with two superb goals, the match winner.

Ashley Young 6 Put in a good shift on the left, but a knock saw him subbed early in the second half.

Wayne Rooney 5 Sadly not the captain’s finest day, missed a penalty, he worked his socks off but nothing stuck for him.

Angel Di Maria 5 Struggled but tried to make things happen and set up United’s second with a lovely ball to Mata.

Radamel Falcao 5 Had little chance to make an impact but worked hard and harrassed Liverpool’s tired defence.
